What is Walk & Talk Therapy?
Walk & Talk Therapy is a counselling approach that encourages us to step outside the traditional therapy room and connect with the natural environment.
Rather than sitting face-to-face, we walk side by side in a calm and peaceful outdoor setting. This more grounded and informal atmosphere often helps thoughts, feelings, and personal insights to surface more freely and authentically, fostering a deeper sense of ease and openness during the therapeutic process.
It can be especially helpful if you:
Find traditional therapy rooms feel restrictive, intimidating, or formal.
Feel “stuck” and need a different pace or change of environment.
Prefer not being in an enclosed space when talking through deeper issues.
Want to combine the benefits of movement and nature with your therapeutic work.
Benefits of Walk & Talk
When counselling meets nature, there are a number of added advantages:
A calming setting: The outdoors helps soothe the nervous system. Fresh air, natural sounds and open space all contribute to easing anxiety and tension.
Greater ease in sharing: Walking side by side reduces the intensity of eye contact and formality, which many find makes it easier to open up.
Movement supports mind & mood: Gentle walking can boost mood, reduce stress, and help clear mental fog. It also helps reconnect mind and body, allowing thoughts and emotions to shift in ways that sitting sometimes can’t.
Fresh perspectives: Being outside often helps spark creativity and new ways of seeing things.
A sense of moving forward: Literally putting one foot in front of the other can help with the psychological experience of progress.
What to Expect
When you choose Walk & Talk Therapy, we’ll arrange a meeting place in a peaceful outdoor setting around Henley-on-Thames — often by the river, in a park, a woodland path, or another green space that feels comfortable.
Even though we are outdoors, the same principles of counselling apply: confidentiality, respect, and safety remain at the heart of our work together.
If the weather is challenging or you’d prefer not to walk, sessions can be adapted, whether by choosing a more sheltered route or moving indoors.
Each session is guided by your pace, both in walking and in conversation, so we move in a way that feels natural to you.
Please get in touch if you would like to explore whether Walk & Talk Therapy could work for you.
Sometimes just stepping outside can help us see things differently.
“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”
